  1. Jonah The Words of Grace Part 5: Jonah 3:5-10The Effective Word of Grace

  2. 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. 10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.

  3. Outline • Repentance • Reverence • Remission

  4. Big Idea Genuine repentance that results from the preaching of God’s word acknowledges God’s Holy wrath and follows through in active turning from sin.

  5. Repentance

  6. Genesis 6:5 The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

  7. Genesis 8:21 …the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth.

  8. Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

  9. Romans 3:10-12 “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

  10. Romans 3:13-15 “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” 14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;

  11. Romans 3:16-18 in their paths are ruin and misery, 17 and the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

  12. Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

  13. James 1:18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

  14. Acts 11:18 “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.”

  15. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  16. Psalm 51:3-5 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

  17. Acts 14:15 …we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them.

  18. Acts 26:20 …repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance.

  19. Reverence

  20. Mark 9:47-48 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48 ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’

  21. Luke 13:3 …unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

  22. Luke 18:13 … standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’

  23. Remission
