  1. Jonah 1 • Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. But the LORD sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.

  2. Jonah 1 • Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten the load. But Jonah had gown down into the lowest parts of the ship, had laid down, and was fast asleep. So the captain came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God; perhaps God will consider us, so that we may not perish.” And they say to one another, “Come let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this trouble has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

  3. Jonah 1 • Then they said to him, “Please tell us! For whose cause is this trouble upon us? What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you? So he said to them, “I am a Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “Why have you done this?” For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you that sea may be calm for us?”

  4. Jonah 1 • For the sea was growing more tempestuous. And he said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.” Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, but they could not, for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them. They cried out to the LORD and said, “We pray, O LORD, please do not let us perish for this man’s life, and do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O LORD, have done as it pleased You.”

  5. Jonah 1 • So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from it’s raging. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the LORD and took vows.

  6. God is Calling Jonah Chapter 1

  7. 1:2 – The Call of the Prophet • God: “Arise, go to Nineveh” • God: “for their wickedness has come up before me” God CARES about People • Jonah: “No!” Actually says nothing, but his actions say NO

  8. The Prophetic Decline • Moses had excuses • Gideon was unsure • Jeremiah didn’t seem excited • BUT all of these engaged God in a dialogue • But Jonah speaks with actions

  9. Running from God? • Jonah, as a prophet, knows you can’t run from God • God calls Jerusalem home, the temple is there • Jonah is running away from: • God’s Temple • God’s People • God’s Call • Maybe God will get someone closer to do it

  10. Have you ever run from God?

  11. Why Not Nineveh? • 500 miles away from Jonah’s home in Gath-Hepher • Major city in Assyria • The Assyrians have tried to destroy the Jews • The Jews want Yahweh to give Assyria fire and brimstone not compassion (God vs Us)

  12. Why Not Nineveh? • 1st prophet to go into enemy land with good news What Will Jonah’s Friends Say • Jonah will look like a traitor and lose his friends • Jonah will be the laughing stock of the Jews for a bunch of heathen pagan Assyrians So Jonah boards a ship and runs

  13. What Will Your Friends Say? Someone has to start the trend of loving your enemies

  14. Jonah = Dove • A dove was bird that brought a message of love • The god of Assyria was symbolized as a dove • God is sending a man whose name means “dove” a symbol of love to a people who have a god who is symbolized as a dove.

  15. God is angry • Because He wants what is best for us • The sailors sacrifice to their gods

  16. Jonah is asleep • 1:3 – DOWN to Joppa • 1:3 – DOWN into the ship • 1:5- DOWN into the lowest part of the ship • 1:5 – Jonah laid DOWN and was asleep • Down is always a direction away from God • Jonah is SPIRITUALLY moving far away from God

  17. The Opposite Captain • Captain: “Arise, call on your God” • God: “Arise, go to Nineveh” • Jonah is a selfish character • The captain cares about the safety of the crew

  18. Jonah thrown into the sea

  19. The 3 Sacrifices • The crew sacrificed cargo to their gods • Jonah was thrown in as a sacrifice • The sailors sacrifice to God • Jonah converted all the crew without even trying

  20. Jonah is Floating in the Sea A little farther DOWN than the bottom of the boat
