  1. Jonah 2 • Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish 3 days and 3 nights. • Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish’s belly. And he said: I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, and He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and You heard my voice.

  2. Jonah 2 • For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the floods surrounded me; all Your billows and Your waves passed over me. Then I said, I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple. The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; the deep closed around me; weeds were wrapped around my head. I went down to the roots of the mountains; the earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet you have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God.

  3. Jonah 2 • When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer went up to You, into Your holy temple. Those who regard worthless idols forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.” So the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

  7. Ancient Near Eastern “Chaos” • The sea was dangerous and terrifying • God sends a great fish to swallow Jonah • Jonah is far from safety and far from God • It is a shame that it usually has to come to this

  9. “From the belly of Sheol” verse 2 • Sheol– grave, death, underworld • Jonah means “you saved me from death” • Jonah is not saying, “save me from the fish” • The fish saved Jonah from the chaos of the sea • The fish is the vehicle of salvation God used

  13. Why Does God Listen? Verse 7 • Jonah ignores God at first • But God does not ignore Jonah • God vs Us • God never runs from us, we always runs from Him • But God is always waiting for us to return • Don’t just float in the ocean, CRY TO GOD!

  14. I Will Pay What I Have Vowed verse 9 • Jonah says, “I’m a prophet, and I will speak when I’m asked to speak and I will go where I am asked to go.” • We MUST say, “I’m a Christian, and I will speak when I need to speak and I will go where I am asked to go.”
