  2. Lesson 1: Physical Activity and Your Health • Learning Target: • Analyze how regular physical activity will enhance and maintain health • Understand the effects of regular physical activity on the body • Assess how physical activity aids in disease prevention

  3. What is Physical Activity?? • Any form of movement that causes your body to use energy • Purposeful • Ex: running, swimming • Regular routine • Wash car, walk dog

  4. Physical Fitness • The ability to carry out daily tasks easily and have enough reserve energy to respond to unexpected demands. • Example: ?? • Daily Tasks: examples?

  5. Benefits of Physical Activity • Makes your body stronger • Increases your energy • Improves your posture • Reduce the risk of serious diseases

  6. How activity affects body systems (physical health) • Cardiovascular System- exercise strengthens the heart muscle (pumps blood more efficiently) • Respiratory System- respiratory system works more efficiently with exercise; more air, muscles don’t tire as quickly • Nervous System- exercise allows you to respond more quickly to stimuli, improved reaction time

  7. Benefits to Mental/Emotional Health • Helps reduce stress • Manage anger and frustration in a healthy way • Improve mood/ decrease risk of depression • Help look and feel better/ increase confidence • Give you a “can-do” attitude when faced with challenges

  8. Benefits to Social Health • Building self-confidence • Opportunity to interact and cooperate with others • Helping you manage stress, enhance relationships with others

  9. Risks of Physical Inactivity • Diabetes- prevents body from converting food into energy • Osteoporosis- condition with decreases in bone density; producing porous and fragile bones • Cardiovascular disease • Cancer

  10. Physical Activity and Weight Control • Metabolism- process by which your body gets energy from food • Calories In=Calories Out • Eat Right and Exercise= maintain a healthy weight

  11. Sedentary Life Style=BAD
