  1. J.S. Graulich, M. Zisman, P.Kyberd, A. Bross MOM Report July-October 2008 Linda R. Coney UCR

  2. Target BM2 BM1 Decay Solenoid Current Situation: What do we have now? • Target • Beamline magnets • Decay Solenoid • Detectors • Hall MICE CM

  3. MICE Current Layout North Wall MICE CM

  4. Target • Target in beam only one working • Implications for commissioning • Much activity: • Mechanical engineering studies – assess/redesign • Vibration tests – look for modes possibly interfering w/ operation • FEA magnetic analysis • Field measurements at RAL – scan across & look for field uniformity • Surface analysis – consultation of experts • High priority MICE CM

  5. Magnets • Decay Solenoid • Not working • Coil 10 not going SC – problem is not understood • Plan to take end cap off of solenoid in shutdown – try to diagnose • Fridge problems – issue might be with the fridge, having trouble getting it to cool below ~50K • Q4,Q5,Q6 • Began having problems in September • Leak in Q4 & Q5 – pools of water in DSA • remove mirror plate • Turned DSA Quads off • Temporary fix October shutdown • Permanent fix December shutdown (Q6,Q7,Q8 also) • D1, D2 happy MICE CM

  6. Detectors • GVA1, GVA2 – getting lots of use! • TOF0 • July: installed and commissioned in front of Q7 • July: first profile seen in TOF0 when temp beam stop out • Now: installed in DSA, running, regular part of data taking • TOF1 – not here • Problems with noise in PMTs • PRIORITY • CKOV • running • Tracker – T1 good – T2 complete & ready to test • KL • July: Commissioned w/cosmics • FNAL Beam Monitors • NOT running YET MICE CM

  7. DAQ • July – DAQ upgraded to include TOF0 and KL • Online Monitoring running online now • NEW Target DAQ running • ISIS beam information on screen in MLCR • ISIS beam loss information in target DAQ MICE CM

  8. NEW • ISIS Beam Loss on monitor in MLCR MICE CM

  9. Hall • South Wall done • North Wall nearly complete • New “loft” behind North Wall • Work on floor (safety) • Fixed/Moveable Beam Stop • Electrical – Daresbury • Network • PPS • Shutdown VERY busy MICE CM

  10. To Be Done: Oct Shutdown • Decay Solenoid • Moveable beamstop • FNAL Beam Monitors • Fix Q4,Q5,Q6 • Check/Test TOF0 • Install target chiller circuit bleed valve • PPS electrical • Earths for DSA Quads • Magnet-on lights MICE CM

  11. Current Status • Capable of limited running • Upper limit on target pulses • Concentrate on front end • Beam studies • Loss information in S7, S8 • Detectors/DAQ running • Recording particle data when possible MICE CM

  12. Safety • Sept • roof of DSA complete • Access to roof • Temporary beam stop agreed • Permanent moveable beam stop completed • PPS scheduled to be done by Jan 2009 • Need improve access to DSA – interlocks • Hall is a very active place • Safety incident resulted in injury • Broken wrist and down one man for shutdown • Need training for all visitors MICE CM

  13. Physics with MICE • July: study proton/pion beam content using TOF between GVA1 and GVA2 (see talk by JSG on Sunday) • July: magnet study (see Sunday session) MICE CM

  14. Latest Physics • NEW • beam loss signals from ISIS • Study of beam loss in ISIS • ~20,000 target dips MICE CM

  15. Beam Loss MICE CM

  16. Goals: Aug-Oct 2008 • Accomplished quite a lot MICE CM

  17. Commissioning needs • Continuity of information • Develop consistent method to pass on information from MOM to MOM • Not relearn • Documentation • Contact list • Trouble shooting detectors/DAQ/beam elements • ISIS information • Exercise experiment regularly • Need regular runs • Still very much in “commissioning” stage – not “running” • Example – Wed warm-up for Saturday/Sunday • Sunday smooth(er) • Heat in hall issue for running MICE CM

  18. MICE CM

  19. MICE Step I • Target needs redesign and proof of functionality – limited number of target dips available for commissioning, beam studies, and physics • There exists a question on how many muons we will really get… • Decay Solenoid – coil 10 dead – not going SC • Problem is currently unknown – need to find problem and then fix it…costs time • Diffuser not here - ?needed for Step 1? • Q4,5,6 leaking water – not able to run • TOF1 not here & apparently not working MICE CM

  20. MICE Step II • Assuming Step I is complete, then: • Spectrometer Magnets – will get the first one by November? • Should definitely go to Fermilab for magnetic field measurements before shipping to RAL • Note: Also need to measure field in MICE hall– questions exist regarding North/South shielding wall effects on magnetic field • Tracker1 • Testing in R8 good idea and going well • Debugging occuring • DAQ implementation and firmware changes ongoing • Need to test Tracker2 in the same way • Might be able to have Step II relatively soon after running in Step I configuration MICE CM

  21. Conclusion • Very busy • Lots to do • Step I 2009 MICE CM

  22. Communication MICE CM

  23. MICE Step I • The good news is that people are working on all of the problematic components • Hall infrastructure trucking along nicely • good communication now w/Daresbury for electrical work for example • Walls going up • Floor supports being done – hopefully leads to cleaner environment in hall soon • Hopefully: • Decay Solenoid problem will be quick diagnosis w/expert from PSI and fix over Dec shutdown • Fix to leaky quads is understood • Target design/test successful • TOF1 shows up soon • Anticipate Step I for ISIS run in Feb 2008 – maybe limited target dips? MICE CM

  24. MICE Step I • More good news: • New target DAQ works & are getting ISIS beam information now • Electron beam studies have been done • What can we do now? • Beam loss studies • Verify validity of simulations • Appease ISIS & ensure running conditions • Target dip optimization • Possibly measure emittance in Step I with TOFs • Maybe start with pions and use the FNAL beam monitors instead of TOF1 MICE CM

  25. American MICE in England • Transportation • MICE van exists • Not permitted to park overnight at private location (including hotel) • We all need to get RAL Permit to Drive in order to use it • This is easy – one form, one copy of US license • Housing • Very hard to find “longer term” and expensive • Ridgeway House too expensive for ~3 month stays • MICE house becoming an option …who is interested? • Paperwork to go to England • Probably don’t need VISA • Probably DO need “business visitor” paperwork spelling out what working on and why • May involve documentation from RAL and/or US institution MICE CM
