  3. Presidency • Republican 1856 • Believed all men were created with certain inalienable rights • Received 40 percent of the popular vote, but carried 180 of 303 Electoral votes. • Civil war broke out-1861

  4. Civil War • $2,000,000 – taken from the Treasury for war materiel • 75,000 volunteers • Broke the Habeas Corpus law • September 22, 1862- slavery abolished
