Xi’an • The Capital of Shan’xi province • The largest city of the Longhai Lanxin Economic Belt along the new Eurasian rail line in China • National traffic junction city • World famous cultural and tour city • National science R&D center • Key city in the northwest • One of industrial centers in China

Xi’an development and Urban Transport Plan Forecast: • by 2010, daily trips will exceed 8 million, including about 2.4 million public transport trips and 2.3 million trips by bicycles the Plan (excerpts): • Develop transport infrastructure • Develop sustainable transport measures to ensure environmental compatibility • Prioritize public transport • Develop BRT mode • Enhance traffic management • Adopt new technologies • Build roads • Promote bicycling

The ITS-SMX project rationale • A spin-off of IMET Sustainable Mobility activities in China • The Beijing ITS-TAP project in the second ring road area • The participation to the CCICED Task force on Sustainable Transport • To contribute to improve air quality conditions in Xi’an through the application of ITS • To identify a possible Sustainable Mobility action based on ITS, that can be implemented in Xi’an, to Support the Xian Transport Plan • To help in intelligent transport control, reasonable distribution of car traffic, management of public transport service, pollution reduction and air quality improvement • Project agreement signed by SEPA, Xi’an Municipality, IMET on January 21 2006

ITS-SMX scope Scope: • a study phase • a small scale experimental activity for Public transport ITS • Period: 2006 Project activities: • Assessment of the reference scenario • Assessment of best practices on ITS for Sustainable Mobility • Identification of a specific ITS action for Xi’an, following a trade off of alternatives • Feasability Study of the action to be implemented • Set up of a small scale fleet management system for bus public transport The implementation area could be the Ming Wall ancient city

Possible ITS application for Xi’an (preliminary) • ITS for counting traffic at the main entrances of Xi’an City and the downtown area of the ancient city • Intelligent Dispatching of Public Transport (AVM) • ITS for freight delivery and redesign of urban logistics • Dynamic supervision of garbage collection trucks • Information systems and data centre with traffic-environmental model

  8. The bus ITS experimental setup • bus transport is a key factor in any Sustainable Mobility action • ITS can significantly improve public transport management and attractivity for passengers • The experimental ITS system will be derived by the Beijing project and implemented for some 10 buses • results will help understanding actual benefits of ITS for bus transport in Xian
