How to Handle Some of Most Common Dental Emergences? Dental emergences may not be life threatening, but if you have ever had a severe unrelenting toothache all night or knocked a tooth out, you understand how they might hijack your life. At Caulfield South Dental Surgery, we are committed to helping you should an emergency arise. We would also like to go through some symptomatic relief measures if you cannot access dental services immediately. Knocked Out Tooth Dental trauma can happen at most unexpected time and place. If you or your loved one has a knocked-out tooth, take these steps: Stay calm and locate the tooth if possible Handle the tooth by the crown (smooth white part) not the root If the root is dirty, rinse it in milk or saline (e.g. solution), do not scrub Put the tooth back in its socket Gently hold the tooth in place by biting on gauze or a handkerchief seek immediate dental treatment contact lens If you cannot put it back in its socket, do not let the tooth dry out, leave it in some milk and go to the dentist. Do not try to put back a baby tooth in its socket.
Broken or Fractured Tooth Same as above to locate and clean the tooth fragment, wrap in plastic wrap and seek dental treatment. Tooth Pain Rinse gently with warm water, floss around the area to make sure there is no food debris stuck around the gum Take analgesics such as Panadol or nurofen. If there is severe nerve pain, sometimes it could be relieved by rinsing with cold water or using a cold compress on the side of face. Swelling and Abscess Should you notice a swelling on the side of your face or on the gum, that usually is an indication of an infection. Again, a cold compress and oral analgesics would help. Please call us immediately. Lost Feeling If you lose a filling, you can plug the hole with sugar-free gum as a temporary measure to stop food getting in. It is important to schedule a dental appointment so we can fill the cavity as soon as possible to prevent tooth decay. To Schedule a Dental Appointment www.caulfieldsouthdentalsurgery.com.au
