  2. How does Schlinck portray Hanna and Michael in Part 2? Find examples to support. • Does Hanna have a fair trial? How does Schlinck use the trial in the novel? • What do you make of Michael’s visit to his father?

  3. What is the purpose of Michael’s trip to visit the concentration camp? Notice that the narrator is narrating 2 visits simultaneously, one at the time of the trial and one later visit. Why might Schlinck have done this? • What about the incidents related to the visit…on the trip there and the night after? To what effect are they included? What ideas do they emphasize/underline?

  4. What have you noticed about how Schlinck uses nature in the novel? Find some examples… • Have you noticed a continuation of the water imagery that was introduced in Part 1 in Part 2. If so, how does Schlinck use and include it?

  5. Why doesn’t Michael say anything to the judge? Is this inaction in character for him? Have we seen this from him in the past? • What do you make of the final chapter of Part 2?
