  1. Grade 5Module 1Unit 2, Lesson 2 Getting to Know Esperanza (Chapter 2: “Las Uvas, Grapes”

  2. Learning Targets • I can discuss answers to questions with my triad and provide evidence to explain my ideas. • I can answer questions about the setting of the novel Esperanza Rising based on evidence from the text. • I can answer questions about the main character, Esperanza, based on evidence from the text.

  3. Remember!!! • The word setting means when and where the story takes place. • The word character means a person in a story. • Esperanza Rising is historical fiction: the author draws upon real events, settings, and some real people, but also made up many events and characters. • NOW, turn to your neighbor and tell them where Esperanza Rising takes place and what characters have been introduced so far.

  4. Triad Talk • In your Triad, discuss the two questions you were given for homework. *Describe the geographical setting of Esperanza Rising. What is it like where Esperanza lives? * What is Esperanza’s relationship with her Papa like? How do you know?

  5. Esperanza Rising • Take out your book and evidence flags! We will continue to use these flags throughout the novel to track important passages. As we read this book, we are going to be thinking a lot about the characters---what they are like, the challenges they face ( including human rights)—and how they change over time.

  6. Follow along as I read aloud beginning on page 4. • In your Triad, think and talk briefly about what the first few pages of Chapter 2 were mostly about. • What did you notice about the title, Las Uvas/Grapes?

  7. Reread page 8 and as you read think about the question below. • The first paragraph on page 8 says that Esperanza would like to live at El Rancho de las Rosas with her Mama and Papa forever. Why does she feel this way? Find details from the text to explain your answer.

  8. Triad Talk In your triad, discuss your thinking for question 1. Each person should mark evidence in their book that supports your groups answer to the question.

  9. Listen and Follow Along On pages 8-12, Esperanza and Mama seem to be worried about Papa. What specific words or phrases in this section of the novel help you know that they are worried? Why are they worried? Use evidence from your text in your answer. Follow along as I read aloud, mark evidence that answers the above question.

  10. Back to your Triad!!!!!!!! • With your Triad, turn and discuss the answer to number 2. • Repeat the process for the next three text-dependent questions. • Remember to clarify terms, think on your own, turn and talk together, and mark answers with your evidence flags.

  11. What did we do today? • We discussed answers to questions with our triad and provided evidence to explain my ideas. • We answered questions about the setting of the novel Esperanza Rising based on evidence from the text. • We answered questions about the main character, Esperanza, based on evidence from the text. • In order to really understand what the author is writing about we must read the text carefully. • Today we made inferences about Esperanza, as we continue to read this novel we will be making more inferences and adding them to the MAKING INFERENCES ABOUT ESPERANZA CHART.

  12. Homework Do “first draft” read of Chapter 3: “Las Papayas/Papayas” Use the question from the Purpose for Reading, Chapter 3 Homework, to focus your reading. Use evidence flags to mark the specific areas in the book to support your answer.

  13. The END!! M1U2L2
