  2. Students will study the various types of landforms. Students will develop an understanding of the role that each type of landform played in the formation of the continental United States. Students will create a model of one type of landform and share it with an audience of their peers and their parents. Unit summary

  3. Essential Question: How do past landforms effect present landforms? Curriculum-framing questions

  4. Unit Questions: What are landforms? What landforms are in the United States? In what ways do landforms affect where people live? Content Questions: Name the different types of landforms? What landforms are in the state where you live? Can mountains grow or shrink? Can landforms be man-made? Curriculum-framing questions

  5. SC.S.3.2 - Students will • demonstrate knowledge, understanding and applications of scientific facts, concepts, principles, theories, and models as delineated in the objectives. • demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationships among physics, chemistry, biology and the earth and space sciences. • apply knowledge, understanding and skills of science subject matter/concepts to daily life experiences. SC.O.3.2.16 – explore erosion of different materials by water and wind (e.g., sand, soil or rocks) SC.O.3.2.17 – describe how volcanoes and earthquakes affect the Earth SC.O.3.2.22 – identify geographical features using a model or map SC.O.3.2.23 – compare and contrast the layers of the Earth and their various features Content standards and objectives

  6. Analyzing data about landforms and their role in creating the United States as it is now. • Explore the curriculum framing questions as a guide in their research. • Use technology to expand their knowledge. • Communicate their discoveries with their peers. • Collaborate with their peers to answer questions that arise during their research. 21st Century learning skills

  7. During the course of this unit, my goals are: • To develop teaching techniques that are new and creative • To provide examples of a project based learning unit that is interesting and provides the students with the desire to work hard • To inspire my students to push the limits, dream big and produce a project that is excellent Unit goals for teacher

  8. During the course of this unit, my students will: • explore new research techniques • develop working relationships with a partner • investigate the materials that can be used to construct various types of landforms • Produce a product to be shown throughout the school environment Unit goals for students

  9. Students will use the Unit Questions and the Content Questions to guide their research in the project. • Students will bring their background knowledge about landforms to the classroom and expand upon it through research • Students will complete the K-W-H-L Chart Gauging Student needs assessment

  10. This type of assessment will provide me with: • An understanding of what the students already know and where they want to go with this lesson. • I will be able to guide their thinking and their research Gauging student needs assessment

  11. Since my students live in a mountainous region; I am looking for classrooms that are located by different types of landforms (e.g., by the Grand Canyon, on the Mississippi River or by the Pacific Ocean) an area that is different from where we are. • Ideas of how to obtain soil and rock samples from other classroom projects Request for feedback
