  2. Beginnings • Origin is lost in the mists of antiquity • Is over 4,000 years old • Beginnings were believed to be in the Indus Valley • Aryans evolved practices

  3. Religion of Variety • Different regions worship different gods within Hinduism • Hinduism is more of a grouping of related religious practices than a unified religion

  4. Major Gods • Brahman – eternal creator and preserver of the world in some aspects seen as the only god • Devas – seen as manifestations of Brahman on Earth • Siva – the destroyer • Vishnu – the preserver

  5. Sacred Texts • The origins of Hinduism were in the Vedas • Polytheistic • ritualistic • Another set of sacred texts are known are the Upnashids • More monotheistic • meditation

  6. Practices • Dharma – duty or righteousness • Karma – moral law of cause and effect • Moksha – oneness with the supreme • Samsara – cycle of rebirth until moksha is achieved
