CMS: Content Management System V6 (Vignette) Hannon Hill Cascade Server • Simpler, but fewer features • No WYSIWYG (must know some HTML) • No taxonomy • Unfriendly URLs • No longer available • Personalized dashboard • Messages • Automatic versions • WYSIWYG editing: What You See Is What You Get • Built-in taxonomy • Friendly URLs • Accessibility compliant
Learning Outcomes: Article Page Drawer Page
Roles • Subject matter experts (Psst! That’s you!) • Organize, write, revise content • Enter content in CMS • Get content approved within department • Portal Services team • Consults with units and plans content • Works with SMEs to identify, organize, and create content • Edits and launches all Blink and TritonLink pages • Responds to update requests • Makes sure pages are reviewed and updated • Questions? • blinkhelp@ucsd.edu
Anatomy of a Blink Page Parts of the whole: The CMS is broken down into parts called “assets.” These assets help you create a whole Blink page
Tips for Getting Started • Use Firefox or IE version 7 or 8 (Firefox/Safari for Mac) • Have two tabs/windows open (Ctrl + t) (Ctrl + n) • Name folders and pages in all lowercase and use dashes instead of spaces (keep names as short as possible)
Creating an Article Page • Most informational pages in Blink use the article template • Log in • Create folder • Exercise–Create a new article page
Creating a Drawer Page • How-to pages, checklists, FAQs, and menu pages use the drawer template • Exercise–Create a new drawer page
Publishing Stage (Dress Rehearsal) Live (Showtime!) • http://stage-blink.ucsd.edu • YOU, the SME, can publish to stage. • This lets you share the page with others (your supervisor, co-worker, anyone who needs to approve) • THE PUBLIC CAN’T SEE THIS! • http://blink.ucsd.edu • Portal Services “launches” the page to the public site: Blink • This is the “official” publishing • THE PUBLIC CAN SEE THIS
Publishing Process 1st Phase 3rd Phase 2nd Phase • CMS Stage Live • Writing Review Launch • Lines Dress Rehearsal Showtime! • Contact blinkhelp@ucsd.edu first to plan new pages and get feedback • After working with the writer, submit the new page(s) via a Workflow Submission Form • Editor will review the page and either contact you with questions or launch
Viewing/Sharing the Stage Site Follow this formula: http://stage-blink.ucsd.edu + /draft/your-folder/system-name + .html = http://stage-blink.ucsd.edu/draft/allisa-becker/article.html
Images General Guidelines 2 Ways to Add Images • We will host images • We don’t host files (.doc, .pdf) • Use .gif or .jpg • Upload an image • Use an existing image from: /Blink/_images
Understanding the Site Structure 1. • The URL is your “map” to finding a page in the CMS: http://blink.ucsd.edu/HR/supervising/index.html 1. 2. 3. 4. 2. 3. 4.
Editing an Existing Page • Minor changes (e.g., typos, date changes) just e-mail blinkhelp@ucsd.edu with the requested change for faster service • Bigger changes (e.g., a paragraph, an entire table, content overhaul) copy the page into your draft folder and make the necessary changes • Exercise–Copy live page into draft folder
