  1. A Church in Crisis A Case Study

  2. Background • God had used the Law of Moses to bring us to Christ. (Gal 3:23-25) • When the Christ would come, he would unify all nations (Is 2:2; 11:10) • Jesus fulfilled (Matt 5:17-18) and completed (Rom 10:4) the Law of Moses • Thus unifying all nations (Col 2:13-14; Gal. 3:26-29) • And now men of all nations flowed into the new kingdom

  3. The Scene Antioch Jerusalem

  4. The Players • Barnabas • Saul (Paul) • James • Peter (Cephas) • Some of the sect of the Pharisees

  5. The 1st Problem Act 15:1 And certain men came down from Judaea and taught the brethren, saying, Except ye be circumcised after the custom of Moses, ye cannot be saved… Act 15:5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees who believed, saying, It is needful to circumcise them, and to charge them to keep the law of Moses. ASV

  6. The 1st Solution Act 15:6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter. Act 15:23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner… Act 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; 29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

  7. The 2nd Problem Galatians 2:11-13 But when Cephas came to Antioch… before certain (men) came from James, he ate with the Gentiles; but when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing them that were of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that even Barnabas was carried away with their dissimulation. ASV

  8. The Crisis • Antioch becomes a battleground a 2nd time. • This time 4/5 of the major players are on the wrong side. • If this is not addressed, Truth is compromised (Gal. 2:5). • Paul MUST address this! But how could he?

  9. “Do what is right and risk the consequences.” Sam Houston

  10. The Solution 1 Timothy 5:20 “Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear.” NKJV Titus 1:13 “This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith” KJV

  11. Consequences • Truth was upheld • The church at Antioch was saved (Acts 18:22-23) • Peter and Paul respected and loved each other(2 Pe 3:15) • Antioch became an example to other churches who would soon face the same problems • Paul and Barnabas turned out okay too (1Co 9:6 Col 4:10)

  12. “Do what is right and risk the consequences.” Sam Houston

  13. “…that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.” Paul (Philippians 1:20)
