  1. What’s Your Issue?Average Salaries vs. Average Health Care Cost Corinthas White III Mr. Preis/Ms. Mclean Math/Humanities 1-22-13

  2. Data table = Parabola 1 = Parabola 2 = Parabola 2 (vertex) = Parabola 1 (vertex)

  3. Y=3.95+125,658.4 (42,980 , 8,149) (4,878 , 32,155)

  4. Quadratics: Vertex & GeneralGeneral: Ax²+Bx+CVertex: f(x)=a(x-h)²+k • Parabola 1: General – f(x)=-0.00001154 x²-.2698 x -15729.13 Vertex – f(x)=-0.00001154 (x -35649)²+6488 • Parabola 2: General – f(x)=0.00002754 x²+0.0619 x+0.1744 Vertex – f(x)=0.00002754(x -35649)²+6488

  5. Effect change of “a” • “a” represents whether the parabola is facing upwards or downwards. • What if “a” was replaced with a value of 2: • Parabola 1: Would make it face upwards, changing parabola and points on the parabola all together • Parabola 2: Wouldn't do anything, since the a is already positive and the parabola is facing upward • Something that could cause this: Some kind of cure found (cancer), more pharmaceutical medicine (different variety), etc

  6. Effect change of “k” • “k” represents whether the parabola higher or lower on the graph • What if “k” was replaced with -3,000 • Parabola 1: It would make the parabola cross the x axis into quadrant four, making medical care cost negative. • Parabola 2: It would make the parabola cross the x axis into quadrant four, making medical care cost negative. • Something that could cause this: Obama care, something paying for medical care for each individual

  7. Data and social issue • There are some societal factors causing these high prices • Data show that the average salaries are increasing, causing the medical care costs to increase • The medical care provided is there and it works (expensive technologies). It Saves lives. Medical alert, press of a button and they are on their way.
