  1. The Russian Revolution • Russia was fighting as part of the Triple Entente • October 1917 – Russian people revolted against the Emperor, Czar Nicholas II • Why? They demanded “Land, Peace, Bread”

  2. The Russian Revolution • The revolt was led by communist Vladimir Lenin • Communism – the belief that everyone is equal – “from each according to his abilities; to each according to his needs.”

  3. The Russian Revolution • Russian soldiers mutinied and refused to fight Germans at the Eastern Front any longer • March 1918 – Russians and Germans signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, ending the war between them • Under this treaty, Russia was officially out of the war (they had their own problems to deal with)

  4. The Russian Revolution • This now gave Germany the chance to turn all its troops onto the Western Front in hopes of winning the war!!
