  1. Pinhole Camera Construction • For this construction, you will need: • A small lidded box/container with no holes or light leaks. One where the lid fits entirely over the box is ideal. (iPhone packaging) • Scissors • Craft Knife • Black permanent marker • Masking tape • Black electrical or gaffer tape • Black spray or poster paint • Drinks can • Blu-tac • Sewing Needle

  2. 1. First of all, prepare your box. Remove any inner packaging that will get in the way. Also remove any clumps of glue which may be left over from where the box was constructed.

  3. 2. Using a ruler and a permanent marker, draw a cross from corner to corner on the lid of the box. Then, roughly draw a square on top of the box about the size of a stamp. You must make sure the crossover point is still in the center

  4. 3. Carefully cut the square out of the top of the box. It is important that you keep the cut out piece for later in the construction. CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WHEN USING THE CRAFT KNIFE.

  5. 4. Using black paint, paint the inside of the box and lid. IF USING SPRAY PAINT, MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA, IDEALLY WEARING A FACE MASK.

  6. 5. Using a craft knife, cut the top off a drinks can. Then, cut out a square about twice the size of the square that was cut away from the box. You may find it easier with a pair of scissors. Once cut, try to make it as flat as possible then using a black permanent maker, colour in the ‘inside’ side. CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN USING THE CRAFT KNIFE AND HANDLING THE CUT DRINKS CAN.

  7. 6. Cover the end of the sewing needle with masking tape. This will make handling the pin easier and safer later on. It is best to use masking tape as it is less slippery

  8. 7. Take your cut out piece of tin and place the black side on top of the blu-tak. Use the pin to make a hole through the middle of the square. Keep the needle as straight as possible and do not wiggle it around. This will make the hole bigger. ALWAYS APPLY PRESSURE FROM THE SIDES OF THE PIN, NEVER FROM THE TOP. YOU DO NOT WANT THE TAPE TO SLIP AS YOU APPLY PRESSURE AND THEN TO CAUSE INJURY.

  9. 8. Grab the piece of cut out box from earlier. Using the technique as described on the previous slide, place a hole through the middle.

  10. 9. Place the pin back through the tin with the printed side facing up. Then place the cut out piece of lid back into the box. Now line up the needle with the hole and push the piece of tin down against the box. This will ensure the hole in the tin is perfectly center.

  11. 10. Apply black tape to one edge of the tin ensuring it is securely in place against the box. Remove the pin then lift up the tin to once again push the cut out piece of card.

  12. 11. Now secure the other sides of the tin making sure it is as flat as possible and that all sides are completely covered. There must be no light leaks between the tin and the box. Your pinhole camera is now complete.
