  1. Topic: Cellular Respiration (4.5)Objective: Cellular respiration is an aerobic process

  2. CELLULAR RESPIRATION EQUATION! • C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP • 3 STEPS TO RESPIRATION • 1. GLYCOLYSIS • 2. KREBS CYCLE • 3. ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN

  3. Glycolysis is needed for cellular respiration. • The products of glycolysis enter cellular respiration ONLY when oxygen is available. • two ATP molecules are used to split glucose • four ATP molecules are produced • Net gain of 2 ATP • two molecules of pyruvic acid produced • Occurs in cytoplasm; does not require oxygen

  4. The Krebs cycle is the first main part of cellular respiration. • carbon dioxide (a product) released

  5. The Krebs cycle produces energy-carrying molecules. • NADH, FADH2 and ATP • are made and • used in the electron • transport chain

  6. The electron transport chain is the second main part of cellular respiration. • The electron transport chain carries ATP, NADH and FADH2 to make ATP. • high-energy electrons enter electron transport chain • hydrogen ionsflow through achannel in themembrane to make ATP just like in photosynthesis

  7. The electron transport chain is the second main part of cellular respiration. • Oxygen (a reactant) picks up electrons and adds to hydrogen ions (H + O = water) • water is produced (a product) • Breakdown one glucose molecule = 38 ATP

  8. ATP and Glycolysis, Fermentation, and Oxidative Respiration • Glycolysis – releases 2 ATP molecules for every glucose molecule • Fermentation – no ATP is made** • Oxidative Respiration – 36 ATP are made for every glucose molecule

  9. LAST TIME……… • C6H12O6 + 6 O2 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + 38ATP • Do you “get it”? • Glucose (from our food or what the plant made in photosynthesis) in the presence of oxygen yields carbon dioxide (from Krebs cycle) and water (the electron transport chain) + ATP (energy)
