  17. THE CASTLE OF FOSDINOVO:The legendof Bianca Maria Malaspina • The castle lives, as well as its architectural splendor and landscape, including its famous legends. • The most famous is undoubtedly that which concerns the young Bianca Maria Aloysia, daughter of Jacob (James) and Malaspina Olive Grimaldi. The beautiful girl was madly in love with a young groom who wanted to marry at all costs. Parents, contrary to that love for the infamous coat of arms the whole family, however, had threatened to shut her up the poor with bread and water in the dungeons of the Castle. The young, not at all frightened by those threats, he had desisted from their purpose of love. Rebellious attitude had forced parents to take a harsh decision. And so it was that the groom was withdrawn from the country and the young woman locked in a convent. Not that he wanted to take the vows or renounce his romantic dream. It was then reported to the castle, locked in prisons and tortured until he wised up. Yet his will was bent. Only then, to avoid occasions of sin, was buried alive in a cell, along with a dog, a symbol of fidelity, and a boar, a symbol of rebellion. To confirm the authenticity of the story, which happened in the recent excavations carried out during the work of consolidation, remains were found bones belonging probably to a girl and two animals. It is thought that the full moon, the ghost of Bianca Maria still lingers about the rooms of the castle, in the form of a girl with long hair resting on her back.
