  1. Quercetin: 5 Proven and Suspected Benefits of This Powerful Antioxidant Lately, there has been a lot of talk about super-foods such as kale, green tea, blueberries, acacia berries, etc. Well, one thing that helps these foods claim this title is Quercetin. But what exactly is Quercetin and what are some of the proven and suspected benefits of this plant-based powerhouse? Read on to discover what the latest science says about this powerful antioxidant and bioflavonoid. What Is Quercetin? As we’ve already indicated, Quercetin is a type of bioflavonoid and antioxidant that is commonly found in plant foods such as leafy greens, broccoli, etc. Like all antioxidants, Quercetin plays an important part in battling free radicals which have been implicated in the aging process as well as other diseases. And while many of us get a healthy dose of this in our diet – provided that we eat enough veggies – many us of rely on supplementation to fill the gaps and to get an even greater benefit from this powerful superfood. The Proven and Suspected Benefits of Quercetin • Protects the brain: In studies conducted on mice, Quercetin has been found to increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the brain. This antioxidant enzyme is thought to improve cognition, learning and even memory. • May contain anti-aging properties: Although more research is needed to prove this, Quercetin is believed to help slow down the aging process. This is due to its ability to eliminate harmful, aging senescent cells. This claim has already been proven in studies conducted on earthworms which saw a 15% increase in their lifespan. • Fights bacteria: Quercetin kills various types of bacteria and reduces Staphylococcus infections, including antibiotic-resistant S. Aureus (MRSA). In cellular studies, Quercetin was proven to be effective in fighting gum and mouth infections as well. • May help to prevent diabetes: Quercetin significantly lowered blood sugar levels in studies conducted on mice. It is believed to help fight diabetes by blocking the enzymes that degrade complex sugars in the gut after meals. • Improves heart health: In successful human studies, Quercetin helped reduce high blood pressure in 41 patients after just 28 days of use. The dosage that was used was 500mg/day.
