Improving Our Relationships With One Another

In this men's meeting on January 26th, we will discuss the importance of establishing expectations, creating a vision for the future, and developing an action plan to address problems of feeling ignored or left out. By being scripturally organized and practicing personal involvement and consideration, we can build stronger relationships within our church community.

  1. Improving Our Relationships With One Another

  2. Men’s Meeting January 26th • Purpose: • To establish expectations • To establish a vision or objectives for the future • Develop a plan of action • “Why such actions are necessary?” • To be Scriptural • To be organized • To be Scripturally organized

  3. Identifying Problems • Attitudes • Personal Involvement • Financial

  4. Identifying Problems • PROBLEM STATEMENT: “THE WESTSIDE CHURCH OF CHRIST IS EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH MEMBERS FEELING IGNORED OR LEFT OUT ON A REGULAR BASIS CAUSING POOR ATTITUDES OR A LACK OF CONISDERATION.” • Why is this happening? • Lack of visitation or contact of those not attending the assembly. • Some feel isolated, left out and not as well accepted by others. • WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? • LACK OF ORGANIZATION • LACK OF PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT • LACK OF PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY • LACK OF CONSIDERATION • LACK OF AWARENESS

  5. Acts 6:1-6 • There was a complaint among the brethren. (6:1) • Why? • Because the Hellenistic widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution. • Why were they overlooked? • Solution: better organize themselves to address the situation. (6:3) In Our Planning Meeting the Men Identified an Issue. This Sermon Is About Solutions and Applications

  6. PROBLEM: SOME FEEL IGNORED OR LEFT OUT • SOLUTION: BETTER ORGANIZATION • A local church that is organized with elders is better equipped to more easily address such issues. (Acts 20:28; 1 Pet. 5:1-2) • More accountability in our work group meetings.

  7. PROBLEM: SOME FEEL IGNORED OR LEFT OUT • SOLUTION: BETTER MEET THE COMMAND TO RECEIVE ONE ANOTHER. • Romans 12:4-5; We are members of one body. We are a family. • Therefore we need to open our hearts wide open (2 Cor. 6:11-13) • Showing more consideration and affection for one another. • Being more involved with one another.

  8. PROBLEM: SOME FEEL IGNORED OR LEFT OUT • SOLUTION: BETTER MEET THE COMMAND TO RECEIVE ONE ANOTHER. • Romans 15:7--Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God.

  9. Receive • BDAG: “…to extend a welcome, receive in(to) one’s home or circle of acquaintances…to take or bring along with oneself, take along,…w. oneself as companion or helper…” • Thayer: “…to take to one’s self…a. to take as one’s companion…receive into one’s home, with the collateral idea of kindness…d. to receive, i.e. grant one access to one’s heart; to take into friendship and intercourse…” • Vine: “…signifying a special interest on the part of the receiver, suggesting a welcome,…”

  10. Accept One Another Just As Christ Also Accepted Us • Christ Accepts: • Black or White • Rich or PoorMale or Female • Young or Old • Learned or Unlearned • Strong or Weak • Christ Accepts Us: • Gladly • In spite of imperfections • Impartially • Freely • Lovingly • Fully

  11. Accept One Another To the Glory of God • John 13:34-35--“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

  12. A Failure to Receive • Makes it impossible to fulfill other “one another” obligations: • Being kindly affectionate to one another. (Rom. 12:10) • In honor giving preference to one another. (Rom. 12:10) • Esteem others better than self. (Phil. 2:3) • Be hospitable to one another. (1 Peter 4:9; Rom. 12:13) • Comfort one another. (1 Thess. 4:18) • Serve one another. (Gal. 5:13) • Restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness (Gal. 6:1) • Bear one another’s burdens (Gal. 6:2)

  13. A Failure to Receive • The opposite or “receive” or “accept” is to “reject” or “refuse”. This is only Scripturally justified when dealing with the unrepentant sinful or the divisive. (2 Thess. 3:6, 15; Rom. 16:17-18) • Why some fail to receive: • Partiality (Jas. 2:9) • Self-righteous spirit (Luke 7:36-50; 1 Cor. 6:9-11) • Judgmental (Rom. 14:10) • Unwilling to forgive (Matt. 6:14-15)

  14. APPLICATIONS: • TO THOSE UNAWARE • WE NEED TO BE CONSCIOUS AND CONSIDERATE OF OTHERS SITUATION. • DO WE SHOW THE CONCERN THAT WE SHOULD? • WE NEED TO BE MORE INVOLVED WITH OUR BRETHERN AND MORE ACTIVE IN VISITATION. • CHALLENGE: INVITE EVERY MEMBER OF THE CHURCH INTO YOUR HOME FOR A MEAL IN THE NEXT YEAR. • WE MAY BE MORE NATURALLY DRAWN TO THOSE WHO HAVE HAD SIMILAR EXPERIENCES OR ARE IN THE SAME PHASE OF LIFE, BUT WE CANNOT ASSOCIATE WITH OUR “PALS” TO THE EXCLUSION OF EVERYONE ELSE.

  15. APPLICATIONS: • TO THOSE FEELING ISOLATED OR LEFT OUT • Why are you isolated? Are you doing your part? Are you waiting on others to come and see you? (Matt. 7:12) • Renew your efforts to get involved in the lives of others. • Renew your efforts in visitation. • Make the effort to reach others and build the bridge. • If you are shunned after renewing your efforts go to your brother. (Matt. 18:15-17) • Show some consideration to your brother (1 Cor. 13:4-8). They might be struggling with something unforeseen to us.

  16. Applications: • To Those Who Are Self-Centered • “I don’t like to spend time with _______________________ because of their _____________________.” • If the problem is sinful, then go to your brother. (Matt. 18:15) • If it is an issue of personality conflicts (Matt. 10:2-4), then we must love (1 Cor. 13:7) and show some consideration. • If both parties fail to view one another in a more generous light then we will not obey the command to receive one another.

  17. Conclusion: • PROBLEM STATEMENT: “THE WESTSIDE CHURCH OF CHRIST IS EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH MEMBERS FEELING IGNORED OR LEFT OUT ON A REGULAR BASIS CAUSING POOR ATTITUDES OR A LACK OF CONISDERATION.” • You and I have to be a part of the solution not a part of the problem. • Get involved with one another. • Get involved in visitation. • View one another as benevolent as possible. Show some consideration. • If you have a problem go to your brother.
