CVD 2013 Schedule – Tuesday, March 19 • All Events on Tuesday are at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, 1300 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington, D.C.  20004 (Cross Street is Pennsylvania Ave. and 14th Street) * • 9:00 a.m.: Congressional Visits Day Registration Opens, Pavilion Room • 9:00 a.m. – Noon: Informal State Team Meeting/Work Time, Pavilion Room • 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.: “Students Bringing Space Research Down to Earth” Room 2325, Rayburn House Office Building • Noon – 1:00 p.m.: LUNCH – ON YOUR OWN • 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.: Guest Speaker • 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.: AIAA Staff Briefing/Orientation, Pavilion Room • 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.: State Team Meeting/Work Time • 5:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.: Wrap Up Question & Answer Session and Closing Remarks, Pavilion Room • *The Ronald Reagan Building is reachable via Metro from the Orange or Blue Lines at the Federal Triangle Stop

CVD 2013 Schedule – Wednesday, March 20 • All events are on Capitol Hill • 8:00 a.m.: Duane Hyland on duty in back of Longworth House Office Building Cafeteria • 9:00 a.m.: Your Meetings Begin (as per your team’s schedule) • 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.: AIAA Congressional Visits Day Reception, Room 902 Hart Senate Office Building

Know Who You are Talking With • The Member • Chief of Staff/Administrative Assistant: Top Advisor to Member • Legislative Director: Analyzes Pros and Cons of Policy Proposals • Legislative Assistant: Reports to Legislative Director on Policy in the Assistant’s Policy Area. • Legislative Correspondent: Reports to Legislative Director on Policy

  8. Making the Most of CVD • Research – Know your Audience • Select – Select the Issue that fits them the best. Remember, focus on AIAA Issues, not personal projects, corporate issues, etc. • Plan – Select the speaker to present the issue • Polish – Make sure the presentation is well thought out and prepared.

  9. Successful Advocacy – At the Meeting • Present – present your advocacy in the most polished professional way possible. • Focus – Pay full attention to the message delivery. No Cell Phones; No private side conversations. • Respond – Be responsive to questions and have supporting data handy. • Thank – Express thanks for the time, etc.

  10. Successful Advocacy – After the Meeting • Follow up – Provide any requested information in a timely manner. • Thank – Send a thank you note, it can’t hurt. • Report – Report to AIAA on your visits • Reflect – Reflect on what went right and wrong, and how to make CVD 2013 better!

At All Times Be Respectful and Focused • Remember we are here at CVD for AIAA’s Advocacy – Not YOUR company’s, project’s or personal cause. • Make Sure to Turn These Things Off While Advocating for AIAA– Personal Electronics/Personal Political Views/Personal Views or Rivalries with Competing Companies/Programs/Agencies

  12. At All Times Be Respectful and Focused • Remember, CVD is about AIAA and Aerospace – Keep a clear focus on AIAA’s Issues. • Make Sure Your Message is AIAA’s Message! • Make Sure the Message is Polished! • Make Sure the Message Counts!
