  1. Earth

  2. Satellites Earth only has one natural satellite. The satellite has the simple name of the moon. We all know of the moon because we see it every night. NSSDC Master Catalog at the end of October 2010 listed 6,578 artificial satellites launched into orbit since 1957. 991 still in orbit as of 2011. The largest artificial satellite being the International Space Station.

  3. Facts • The lowest point on the earth is the Mariana Trench at 10,911 m below sea level. • As many as 5,100 people have attempted to climb Mt. Everest. • Two people have made it to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh made it to the bottom of Challenger Deep. • The highest point on earth is Mount Everest at 8,848 m above sea level.

  4. The CORE learning experience

  5. Fun Facts Con. - circumference: 24,901.5 miles- diameter: Nearly 8,000 miles- surface area: 196,935,000 sq miles- percent of earth's ocean: approximately 70% - percent of earth's land: approximately 30%-Earth is referred to as the BLUE PLANET. WHY? Because from space,  the oceans combined with our atmosphere make our planet look blue. -Earth is the 5th largest planet in our solar system -There are 10 million species of life on earth -Earth is the only known planet that has life living on it. -Earth has several layers with unique chemical and seismic properties: Crust, upper mantle , transition region, lower mantle , D layer , outer core , and the inner core from the surface.

  6. Fun Facts Con. Earth means:In astronomy mythology, her Greek name was Gaea. Earth was the mother of the mountains, valleys, streams and all other land formations. She was married to Uranus. -Earth is the only planet that isn't named after a Greek god -1 orbit of the sun equals 365.3 days -1 rotation equals 23 hours and 56 min. -Earth is the 3rd planet from the sun

  7. Atmosphere • There are 5 main layers of the atmosphere. • The layers are Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, Exosphere. • 78% of Earths atmosphere is Nitrogen, 21% of the atmosphere is Oxygen, and 1% is a mixture of Carbon Dioxide, Water Vapor, and Ozone.

  8. Temperatures • Unlike other planets, surface temperatures on Earth allow water to exist as a solid, liquid, and gas. (Science voyages, 2000) • Temperatures very by region and also by season. Seasons are determined by the tilt of the axis of Earth in relevance to the Sun.
