  6. French Colonists • Took land from peasants • Raided rubber and rice • Jailed and restricted freedom to Vietnamese • 1930’s • uprisings

  7. Ho Chi Minh • Indochinese Communist Party founded in 1930 • Led uprisings • Condemned to death by French • Fled to Soviet Union and China

  8. 1941 • Japanese take control of Vietnam • Minh returns • Vietminh created

  9. September 2, 1945 • Ho chi Minh declared independence • Hanoi, Vietnam

  10. France • 1946 – Drove Vietminh out of the cities • Gained control of the southern half

  11. United States • 1950 • Began sending aid ($$) to France • Irony • US formerly supplied Ho Chi Minh in efforts against the Japanese! • Why aid France now???!!???
