Course Themes Which Relates • May address technology, culture, migrations, or environment • Possible question within a question • Designed for you to use your information to make connections • Construct an argument (relates DIRECTLY to question). Include argumentation, causation, contextualization, and synthesis

  3. Definitions • Argumentation: Argue and use support for your argument. • Causation: How does something happen, Why? Relate issues to each other. • Contextualization: Place the event in the time period. Example Black Death in Middle Ages. Socio-economic situation etc. • Synthesis: Depending on the question, being able to make an understanding of changes and continuities over time. Example Black Death and Spanish Flu 1918. May not be direct, may have to draw own conclusions.

  4. Essay • You should spend no more than 40 minutes, 5 of which should be planning. • Directions: you are to answer the following question. You should spend 5 minutes organizing or outlining your essay. Write an essay that • Has a relevant thesis and supports that thesis with appropriate historical evidence • Addresses all parts of the question • Uses world historical context to show continuities and changes over time • Analyzes the process of continuity and change over time

  5. Essay • Question: Analyze the continuities and changes in cultural beliefs and practices in ONE of the following regions from 1450 to the present • Sub-Saharan Africa • Latin America/Caribbean

What Good Responses Should Include • “cultural beliefs and practices” – Religion, philosophy, ideology, science and technology, education, the arts, literature, and architecture. • YOU MUST ADDRESS BOTH. Analysis and change and continuity over time 1) change 2) continuity • DO NOT BE VAGUE “there were more changed than continuities” • FOCUS ON TIME PERIOD 1450-present

What Good Responses Should Include • Move beyond beginning, middle, and end • It is desirable to have dates, not always possible • You should include why changes happened • Specific can create validity to cause and impact • “Nationalism grew in Africa in the 20th century” • “Nationalism grew in Africa, which led to the overthrow of European empires”

What Good Responses Should Include • Focuses on extra-regional connection or global processes • Global links relative to the question • Don’t just focus on a similar situation elsewhere in the world • “China and Brazil both had Jesuit missionaries” • “European Jesuit missionaries were proselytizing in South America and winning converts. This happened in China as well”

  9. What Good Responses Should Include • Relate the issues being covered • Relate Christianity to nationalism in Latin America • Relate Syncretism to religious beliefs in Africa • Make SPECIFIC CONNECTIONS!
