  1. Assessment Uses Assessment Of, For, and AS Learning

Assessment of Learning • The purpose of this kind of assessment is usually SUMMATIVE and is mostly done at the end of a task, unit of work etc. • It is designed to provide evidence of achievement to parents, other educators, the students themselves and sometimes to outside groups (e.g., employers, other educational institutions).

  3. Reflection Think about an example of assessment of learning in your own teaching. How will it benefit instruction and achievement? Can that assessment be extended?

  4. Assessment for Learning Assessment for Learning is formative, and involves both teachers and students in ongoing dialogue and descriptive feedback, and reflection throughout instruction. Assessment for learning is a crucial component of effective instruction. When students clearly understand their learning targets, and their progress toward those learning targets, they are more motivated. Additionally when teachers clearly understand how well their students are learning content, they can make better decisions about how to differentiate and pace learning experiences in the classroom.

  5. Reflection Think about when you use assessment for learning in your classroom. Is the kind of feedback you provide to students furthering their learning? How?

  6. Assessment As Learning Through this process students are able to learn about themselves as learners and become aware of how they learn – become megacognitive (knowledge of one’s own thought processes). Students reflect on their work on a regular basis, usually through self and peer assessment and decide (often with the help of the teacher, particularly in the early stages) what their next learning will be. Assessment as learning helps students to take more responsibility for their own learning and monitoring future directions.

  7. Reflection Think about when you use assessment as learning in your classroom. Do you encourage students to take risks associated with making their thinking visible? Share an example.

  8. Pondering Further… How will these types of assessments affect instruction and achievement as it relates to the Common Core Standards?
