Assignment from Last Meeting If you’re currently looking for a job:  Pick two jobs you’re interested in (based on your career test results) and explore the job market and potential job opportunities/employers in Colorado Springs If you're currently employed:  Check out the free training and career development workshops available through the Pikes Peak Workforce Center at http://www.ppwfc.org/ and consider signing up

Job Application Process Information you will need Personal information Your address/contact info and picture ID Educational History High school/college/other training names/addresses Work History (if applicable) Employer names/addresses, dates worked, pay rate References Names of people who can provide a reference for you and their contact info (phone/email address) Professional references are preferred Professional jobs also require a résumé and cover letter – today’s session will not cover those topics, but AAC instructors are available to assist outside of WSG

  8. Job Application Process What about your Social Security Number (SSN)? Some employers require applicants to list their SSN on a job application – if you don’t list it, your application may not be considered If you can avoid listing it until you are actually considered for the job, it’s best to keep it confidential until further along in the hiring process Never email your SSN to a prospective employer (or anyone else) It’s ok to ask about leaving your SSN off the job application

Job Application Process How to make a good impression when turning in an application Fill out your application with care Read and follow the instructions, print neatly, check your spelling Pay attention to your appearance Wear clean, conservatively styled clothes. Style your hair neatly. Dress according to the type of work you are seeking. Introduce yourself Shake hands Wait for the employer to offer his/her hand first – be firm but not too vigorous Be attentive and polite

Job Application Process How to make a good impression when turning in an application (continued) Listen carefully to questions asked Provide complete but fairly brief answers Show interest in the job Ask “What is the next step in the process?” and thank the employer for his/her time before leaving

  11. Discussion What other questions do you have about the job application process? What if an employer wants to interview you on the spot? Tip: Be prepared for an on the spot interview. Inform yourself about the company. Write down why you are a good candidate for the job you’re applying for, so you can share that with the employer if asked. Practice interviewing with your ally before turning in your application.

Application Exercise Practice turning in your application Instructors will serve as “employers” Turn your application in to an employer, and focus on the following: Introduce yourself Shake hands (wait for the employer to offer) Be attentive and polite Listen carefully to questions asked Provide complete but fairly brief answers Show interest in the job Ask “What is the next step in the process?” and thank the employer for his/her time before leaving
