  1. EUMETSAT STG-OPSWG 27th Meeting Item 7.1 Cover Note EUM/STG-OPSWG/27/10/VWG/05

  2. Reception, tailoring and retransmission of NPP/NPOESS data for Europe • The forthcoming launch of NPP will see a wide variety of data sets being produced by NOAA. There will be a mixture of products comprised of various data records and NOAA unique and tailored products built from these records. • In response to [RD1] the STG Operations and Science Working Groups were asked to consider the data sets to be produced from NPP and NPOESS and to formulate a set of requirements describing which products which will be needed and how they should be provided. • This presentation summarises the requirements expressed in response to this request and proposes a corresponding delivery system. EUM/STG-OPSWG/27/10/ VWG/05- K. Holmlund/S. Elliott Issue 1 10-11 March 2010

  3. Redistribution of NPP/NPOESS data via EUMETSAT • Redistribution concept discussed at North America / Europe Data Exchange Meeting (NAEDEX) in December 2009 at ECMWF • General support for the concept from US and European side • Benefits in terms of: • Fewer interfaces from European users to NDE to be managed • Reduction in required transatlantic bandwidth EUM/STG-OPSWG/27/10/ VWG/05- K. Holmlund/S. Elliott Issue 1 10-11 March 2010

  4. Member State requirements for NPP/NPOESS products • Requirements have been received from 6 member states and also from ECMWF • Many requested data sets are common to more than one member state allowing the saving of bandwidth • Where specific requests for a data format have been made, these have been for BUFR • Most popular are CrIS radiances, ATMS radiances and VIIRS polar winds EUM/STG-OPSWG/27/10/ VWG/05- K. Holmlund/S. Elliott Issue 1 10-11 March 2010

  5. NPP products from the first phase From 3 months until 20 months after launch of NPP NOAA Unique Products NPP/NPOESS Delivered Products Number of requests EUM/STG-OPSWG/27/10/ VWG/05- K. Holmlund/S. Elliott Issue 1 10-11 March 2010

  6. NPP products from the second phase From 20 months after launch of NPP until 1 month before launch of C1 NOAA Unique Products NPP/NPOESS Delivered Products Number of requests EUM/STG-OPSWG/27/10/ VWG/05- K. Holmlund/S. Elliott Issue 1 10-11 March 2010

  7. NPP products neither in first nor second phase Product not foreseen for either phase. All are NOAA Unique Products. Number of requests EUM/STG-OPSWG/27/10/ VWG/05- K. Holmlund/S. Elliott Issue 1 10-11 March 2010

  8. Member State requirements for NPP/NPOESS products • Some responses indicated relative preferences for various data sets. The larger data sets (i.e. the radiances) were generally given the highest priority • Most requests were for data as delivered by NDE, corresponding to Section 5.2 of [RD1] • There was also interest in EUMETSAT tailoring data sets in a similar way to that currently done for MODIS data, corresponding to Section 5.3 of [RD1] • Many Member States are yet to express their requirements EUM/STG-OPSWG/27/10/ VWG/05- K. Holmlund/S. Elliott Issue 1 10-11 March 2010

  9. Proposed way forward for provision of NPP/NPOESS data to European users • Consolidated list of data sets to be defined based on requirements received • Data set sizes and frequency of delivery to be used to establish bandwidth requirements • Example tailored data sets to be produced • SAF activities planned for CDOP-2 may introduce further requirements • Member States to be informed of refined list of products, their sizes, format, resolution et c. EUM/STG-OPSWG/27/10/ VWG/05- K. Holmlund/S. Elliott Issue 1 10-11 March 2010
