  1. Education and Religion Angel Shawn Itzel Dipo

  2. Education • In the specific setting of the movie, children are generally taught to be against and persecute the minority. Usually those that were Jewish.Bruno is adventurous by nature and the way he is taught by his tutor does not fit his learning style. Therefore, he is unable to process the information well.

  3. Functionalist perspective of education • Education stabilizes and ensures the smooth operation of society. It teaches knowledge, skills, and culture. It also helps to integrate students and helps them to find a good occupation.

  4. Conflict perspective of education • Education is meant to limit the potential of students for power and social rewards. The two main points made by conflict sociologists are social control and tracking. An example of social control in the educational system would be being taught to obey the teacher or to come to class on time. An example of tracking would be placing more intelligent students in AP or IB classes. Conflict sociologists often view social control as creating unquestioning citizens, and tracking as a way to isolate the lower and upper class.

  5. Interactionalist perspective of education • Interaction between students and teachers is needed. Tracking has a huge effect on the effort put forth by many students. If a student is given low expectations then he/she will amount to low expectations.

  6. Religion - • While most of the Nazis in history were Catholic, it is not specified what religion Bruno and his family were. In the movie, Bruno’s tutor describes Jewish people as the enemy. Think about how disapproval could shape your views on the world as you watch the movie.

  7. Functions of religion • The functions of religion are social cohesion which creates bonds between people and creates a sense of belonging. More functions are social control, and emotional support. It often motivates people in the most hopeless times. Conflict sociologists describe it as a distraction from social and political change. It is described by Marx as “the opium of the people.”
