Evolution and the Fossil Record • Evolution is aprocess by which livings things have CHANGED OVER TIME (a LONGamount of time) • Evidence is contained in the fossil record • Using the fossil record, scientists have learned that species that are alive today have evolved from common ancestors that existed millions of years ago • Species have become more complex as life continued to evolve

  2. Evidence of Common Ancestry • Homologous Structures: Body part of organisms that are similar in structure and placement, but different in function • Each species evolved to use the structures differently to suit their environments

Linking Evolution to the Environment • Evolution can be caused due to environmental changes • As the Earth changed, life on Earth changed as well • If the environment changes, species must either adapt or they do not survive (become extinct) • Species with adaptations that are suited to the environment survive and pass their traits on
