  2. bestchance • independent, not-for-profit, community organisation. • universal, specialist, educational and welfare services. • holistic approach to assisting young children and families with an integrated model of service delivery. • programs include Child Care, Early Childhood Intervention, Parent and Child Support, Training, Parent Counselling and Cheshire, an independent, primary school for children with significant social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties, Kindergarten cluster management.

  3. A successful partnership is formed • Inner East PCP • Jean Hailes Foundation • City of Monash – Maternal and Child Health Nurses • bestchance Child Family Care bestchance is the operating name of Child and Family Care Network Inc

History • 2010 – Ms Chris Thompson, General Manager, bestchance, proposed to the Inner East PCP that funds be allocated to the delivery of the What Were We Thinking (WWWT) program in the City of Monash. • WWWT is a group based, structured psycho-educational program for parents and their first newborns • WWWT aims to prevent post partum mental health problems in women and improve family functioning • Dr Heather Rowe and Professor Jane Fisher (Jean Hailes), creators of the program, were approached to explore a pilot program in City of Monash.

Training • Three Maternal and Child Health Care nurses and three staff from bestchance completed one day’s training • This training provided the theoretical background and input on the model, research findings etc. • Training was further enhanced with debriefing sessions following delivery of each of the four programs. • A time for getting to know each other, share knowledge and forge collaborative practice.

Program implementation • Staff (MCHN & bestchance) were identified and attended the 6 hour training program • Marketing to new parents • Session details • Location • Informal vs formal • Breastfeeding arrangements • Women attending alone vs couples attending • Mobile phones • Which staff 3 sessions planned, 4 were delivered between August – November 2011

Collaboration & indirect benefits • An opportunity for MCHN & bestchance to engage in service delivery together. • High quality training & the ability to use learning in an ongoing way with other clients. • Increased trust and appreciation of each other’s role and expertise. • Consulting with each other more broadly than in relation to WWWT. • Success of the program hinged on the partnership maintained at a senior management level. This went smoothly at all times and the Project Control Group meetings were primarily attended by senior managers from key organisations.

Conclusions and Future directions • This was the first time WWWT was delivered in a community setting • No decision at this time in relation to ongoing delivery of WWWT in City of Monash • Lessons in relation to marketing: • Personal letter worked best • How do we engage with parents • Who are younger • With lower levels of education
