  5. Discussion Questions for Week 1 • What are “my feelings about my experiences of writing?” • What are the “common elements in my negative feelings about writing?” • What are the “lessons to be learned from my positive experiences of writing?”

  6. Advancing Your Argument: Week 3 • The main reasons journal articles are rejected is: no argument. • Do more than just describe the situation. • “I agree” or “I disagree” practical (albeit not theoretical) test… • Flo Guido is a great writer. • Flo Guido is a writer.

Workshop Week 3 • Write a statement of the argument of your article. • Share it with your mentor/mentee. • Mentor/mentee – repeat the argument back to the other person. • Ask – did I get the argument right? What might I have missed? • Repeat. • Share in the large group for the other person. (1-2 minutes). • Question: What was useful about this exercise? What was useful about hearing someone else share your argument in her words?

Publishing Qualitative Research • Choose a journal and consider “why that journal?” • Who is the editor and who is the audience? • How does this scaffold your research agenda? • How does this impact tenure and promotion? • Find sample articles from that journal. • Review the list of people on the editorial board – who might be likely to receive your article? • What are the dominant paradigms of that journal (i.e. issues, language, notions of ‘congruency’ or not)? • Are the readers familiar with your theoretical framework, methodology and methods? How will you need to educate your readers within the page limits? • Other issues?
