  1. WP4: Theory in the VObs Gerard Lemson

  2. Objectives • Assess the inclusion of theory data and services in the Virtual Observatory • Theory Expert Group • establish a framework for the inclusion of theory in the VObs. • organise workshop • Stimulate national/partner activities. Gerard Lemson

  3. Deliverables Gerard Lemson

  4. Reminder: Why special attention to theory ? • Existing protocols not applicable, observationally biased • Data models insufficient • Archiving generally ad hoc • No existing standardisation, no “FITS for simulations” • New use cases Gerard Lemson

  5. Theory Experts Group (TEG) • Members: • Santi Cassisi (INAF), Miguel Cervińo (INTA), Gerard Lemson (MPG, chair), Pedro Osuna (ESAC), Joop Schaye (NOVA), Nic Walton (LU), Hervé Wozniak (CNRS) • Tasks • SAC workshop • Co-authors whitepaper • Theory Sections in DCA census questionnaire Gerard Lemson

  6. Euro-VO Theory Workshop • Garching, April 7-9 • followed by WP5 workshop, April 9-11 • Program focused on science • 3+1D simulations • microphysics simulations • theory-theory interoperability • theory-observational interface • computational infrastructure • discussions! • Proceedings @ Memorie della Società Astronomica Italiana – Supplementi • http://sait.oats.inaf.it/Supplementi.htm • submitted Gerard Lemson

Special permission received for non-EU members. Speakers (invited) Participants Gerard Lemson 2008-11-19/20 Gerard Lemson, chair WP4

  8. Some conclusions 3+1D (“macro”) simulations Interest in community high for access (e.g. Millennium) Interesting services should be deployed: visualisation Data formats need attention (binary VOTable, HDF5) “Comoving units” ? Development in IVOA SimDB for discovery SimDAP for access services Focus “micro-simulations” many opportunities for interoperability community has been pondering standardisation participants are willing to contribute to VO efforts workshop “planned”, possibly financed by DCA(AIDA?). IVOA TIG focus. Gerard Lemson 2008-11-19/20 Gerard Lemson, chair WP4

  9. Whitepaper • “Framework for inclusion of Theoretical Astronomy Services in the VObs” • Authors: TEG • Editors: GL, HW, JZ • Contributors: Ugo Becciani, Laurent Bourges, Igor Chillingarian, Claudio Gheller, Franck LePetit, Patrizia Manzato, Carlos Rodrigo, Enrique Solano. Gerard Lemson

  10. Recommendations • Participation • Publication: Scientific results MUST be made available online. • Usage: Online resources SHOULD be used by scientists. • Standardisation • Definition: Interoperability standards MUST be defined. • Participation: The scientific community MUST be involved in the standardisation process. • Implementation • Mapping: metadata SHOULD be assigned to published data sets and services according to IVOA data model standards. • Protocols: services SHOULD implement IVOA standard protocols. • Data formats: Services SHOULD provide results in an IVOA-standard data format. • Applications: VObs aware client tools SHOULD be written. • Registration: Online resources MUST be registered in an IVOA compatible resource registry. • Resource allocation • Standardisation efforts MUST be supported. • Implementation efforts MUST be supported. • Outreach SHOULD be supported. Gerard Lemson

  11. Census on theory data centers Gerard Lemson 15 institutes 23 archives (mainly micro-simulations) 10 services (focusing on theory/observation interface) non-classical data types: particle properties, hierarchical trees, isochrones, rate coefficients… great interest for VO compliance; already applying VO techniques to a certain degree (VOTable, registered, DAL, SNAP) 2008-11-19/20 Gerard Lemson, chair WP4

  12. IVOA activities • EuroVO-DCA (partners) very active in IVOA. • Participation in theory sessions at interops Beijing (funded!), Cambridge, Trieste, Baltimore • TIG chair and vice-chair from France/Italy • Hervé Wozniak/Claudio Gheller • Until May 2008, GL • Standards development • SimDB+SimDAP (formerly SNAP) • Meeting in Garching, April 2007, supported by EuroVO-DCA • France/Germany building prototype SimDB • Italy/USA leading SimDAP effort • S3 proposal from Spain VO • prototypes in SVO and ITVO • Theory Semantics Gerard Lemson

  13. Partner activities • France (Horizon, PDR codes, SimDB) • Germany (Millennium, SimDB, TMAP) • Italy (ITVO@Trieste simulation database, BaSTI, VisIVO) • Spain (S3 implementations) • See also whitepaper, Appendix B • Some examples (if time permits) Gerard Lemson

  14. Gerard Lemson

  15. Millennium DB and TOPCAT Gerard Lemson

  16. VisIVO • Development of VisIVOServer by OACatania, that will permit to visualize cosmological data server side Gerard Lemson

  17. Spain: S3 prototypes Gerard Lemson
