Proclamation of 1763 • Who: king • What: Colonists can’t move west of Appalachians • Why: Must keep treaties with Native Americans • Where: Ohio River Valley and along Appalachians • Result: king says to follow but doesn’t enforce it • Sugar Act of 1764 • Who: Parliament and king • What: Indirect tax on sugar, molasses, coffee • Why: Need $$ to pay war debt • Where: on colonies through merchants who sell these items • Result: colonists angered because of no representation in Parliament; GB will reduce amount

Stamp Act of 1765: • Who: Parliament and king • What : Direct tax on newspapers, legal documents, almanacs • Why: To raise money for war debt • Where: on colonists directly, must be paid in real money • Result – boycotts of British goods and meeting of Stamp Act Congress; GB will repeal • Declaratory Act of 1766 • Who: king • What: Yes I do have the power to tax…I am the KING! • Why: so the colonists can’t complain about any other taxes • Where: colonies – duh! • Result: King begins quartering; colonists refuse to follow

Quartering Act of 1766 and 74-75 • Who: king and Parliament • What: colonists must keep soldiers in their homes • Why: king must have troops in colonies to enforce his taxation rules • Townshend Duties • of 1767: • Who: king and Parliament • What: direct taxes on paint, lead, glass, tea • Why: Still needs $$ for empire • Where: in/on colonies • Reaction: more boycotts: repealed except for tea

  5. Intolerable Acts of 1774 • Who: King and Parliament • What: closed Boston harbor, removed government of Mass. And sent criminals to GB • Why: to punish after Boston Tea Party- • Result: First Continental Congress held – SC Henry Middleton president; Plan non-importation/nonex-portation boycott of all trade with GB; Committees of Correspondence write letters all over colonies • Tea Act of 1773 • Who: that dratted old king again! • What: a reverse enumeration – colonies may only buy tea from the BEIC • Why: They have a huge surplus due to trade deals • Result: colonists boycott, want to keep getting tea from Netherlands, smugglers searched via writs of assistance; tea parties – Boston; SC – rot on docks; KING MAD!
