It is a monument to help us remember those who lost there lives on september 11 2001. One World Trade stands 1,776 feet high in honnor of the year America claimed it’s independence. Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is. Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.” Explanation: The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character. There are five different methods of indirect characterization: Speech: What does the character say? How does the character speak? Thoughts:What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings? Effect on others toward the character. What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character? Actions: What does the character do? How does the character behave? Looks: What does the character look like? How does the character dress? Topic Sentence • Introduce the topic of your sentence. • In the story Thank You Ma’am by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones is a very motherly woman.

Quote Set Up and Quote • When Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones is scolding Roger for trying to steal her pocketbook, she notices that his face is dirty. She states, “And your face is dirty. I got a great mind to wash your face for you. Ain’tyou got nobody home to tell you to wash your face?”
Analysis • How does the quote you provided prove your topic sentence? • This is very important! This is the WHY. • Must be clear, but specific. Do not assume that I agree with you, or that I know what you mean.

5 Part Response • The character trait that I chose to describe Mrs. Jones is motherly. Roger tries to steal Mrs. Jones’ pocketbook while she was walking. She said, “And your face is dirty. I got a great mind to wash your face for you. Aintyou got nobody home to tell you to wash your face?” This shows that she was motherly because she wanted to clean his face. She then takes him to her home, cleans his face, and offers to cook him dinner. In the end, she even gives him money to buy shoes. In conclusion, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones is motherly.
