6.6 TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS. Single Displacement & Double Displacement. SINGLE DISPLACEMENT REACTIONS. A reaction in which one element displaces or replaces another element in a compound A cation (+ ve ) will always replace a cation An anion (- ve ) will always replace an anion.

  2. SINGLE DISPLACEMENT REACTIONS • A reaction in which one element displaces or replaces another element in a compound • A cation (+ve) will always replace a cation • An anion (-ve) will always replace an anion

  5. Metal Activity Series • A more reactive element will replace a less reactive element • The reactivity of a metal will determine if a displacement reaction will occur (single)

  6. DOUBLE DISPLACEMENT REACTIONS • Occur when 2 elements in different compounds displace each other (trade places) • Many of these reaction occur between 2 ionic compounds in solution • Often a precipitate is formed (tiny specks of solid material in the solution)
