3. Farmers and City Dwellers • Division of labor – to divide work among themselves according to there ability. • Agriculture – another word for farming. • Domesticate – to adapt plants or animals to there uses. • Merchants – people that sell goods bought from traders.

4. Mesopotamia • Caravans – group of traders traveled together on long journeys. • Almanacs – written on clay tablets to explain the best way to plant, irrigate land, and care for crops • Ziggurat – the largest and tallest building in every city-state • Cuneiform – a writing system

5. Egypt • After life – a life after death • Papyrus – paper made from plant called papyrus pant. • Nation-state – a region with a united people and single government. • Pyramids - a triangular structure

6. Greece • Democracy – rule by the people • Harbor, Peninsula, Isthmus – are water resources for the Greeks to use • Acropolis – a fort started on a hill. • Cultural-borrowing – a culture takes another culture idea.

7. Rome • Colosseum – where people got entertained from Roman games • Road – made to move Romans soldiers to point A to point B • Concrete – type of material used for structures • Standing Army – a army always established
