  4. Biomanufacturing in N.C. A Growing Industry in N.C. • 16 biomanufacturing companies • More than 30 other companies engaged in related manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and medical devices • Together, they employ more than 20,000 people.

  6. Biogen Idec Produces biopharmaceuticals to treat cancer, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory diseases. Its large-scale manufacturing in Research Triangle Park is one of the largest cell culture facilities in the world.

  14. KBI BioPharma Is a contract biomanufacturer in Durham. The company produces a variety of bio-pharmaceuticals for other companies.

  15. MWG Biotech Offers products and services for gene research. The company produces custom DNA sequences. The facility is located in High Point.

  16. Argos Therapeutics Is developing therapeutic vaccines in Durham, which are given to treat (instead of prevent) diseases such as cancer and HIV/AIDS.

  17. Biolex Produces hard-to-make therapeutic proteins by growing them in the aquatic plant Lemna (duckweed). The biomanufacturing plant is in Pittsboro.

  21. Merck & Co. Broke ground on a new biomanufacturing facility in 2004. When completed in 2008, the Durham facility will produce vaccines for chicken pox and measles-mumps-rubella (MMR).
