  1. Objective: 8.EE.A.2 Evaluate square roots of small perfect squares 8.NS.A.2 Estimate the value of irrational expressions. For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations. 8/15/19  Good morning!Head to GOFO!Do you know your perfect squares?

  2. Bellringer 1.  Select all numbers that are perfect squares from the following list: A.  50 B. 125 C. 144 D. 6 E. 64 2.  What is the square root of 49? A.  7 B. 10 C. 9 D. 25 3.  What is 9 squared? A.  3 B. 81 C. 18 D. 36

  3. Announcement We have not even talked about cubes or cube roots.  This week, don't worry about last 2 hmwk problems.  If you make an 80%, it will be counted as 100%.  You only get this bonus if you earn it.

  4. AGENDA *Recap of Squares and Roots *Approximating Square Roots-notes *Online Square Root Game

  5. VOCAB

  6. Square Roots have 2 solutions...Whaaaaattt? Square numbers have two of the SAME factors. The square root of 36 could be 6 or -6. 6 x 6= 36 -6 x -6 = 36

  7. If there is no sign in front of the radical, list the positive root.

  8. If there is a +/- sign in front of the radical, list BOTH square roots.

  9. If there is a - sign in front of the radical, list the negative square root.

  10. Fractions: If there is a fraction under the radical, take the square root of the numerator AND the denominator

  11. What number can you square and get -16? Negative under the Square Root-NO SOLUTION

  12. Use cheez-its to make perfect squares But what if we CUT squares? Could we cut the pieces to make 2 cheez-its a square?

  13. Possible tries: thirds fourths tenths Which approximation comes closest?
