Workshop Aims • Build links between members of the BRIDGE network • Review, integrate and extend outputs from workshop one • Revise and develop the NEA/VNN framework • Provide content for ongoing reviews e.g. values and decision paper • Identify and specify key areas of research • Feed into the forthcoming synthesis workshop

  3. Structure of the day • Four activity rounds: two before and two after lunch • Round zero– terminology • Rounds one-three – breakout groups (approx. 8 people per group) • Ethical and cultural values • Aggregation, scale and ‘fit’ • Evidence and decision-making • Each group has a rapporteur and ‘chair’ • People encouraged to stay with their group, small number can change… • Summing up and close 1630

  5. Activities • Round 0: colour-code and small group review Green = ‘Go - I agree’ Orange = ‘Wait – minor amendment’ Red = ‘Stop – I have an alternative suggestion’ • Round 1-3: short presentations, breakout groups and feedback to group as a whole

Round 1: Values and shared values • Objectives • Develop a conceptual framework around shared values and link this to NEA/VNN framework • Develop in-depth research agenda • Activities • Alan Holland – The ethics of valuation • Jasper Kenter – Shared and social values • Breakout discussion groups • Feedback

Round 2: Deliberative approaches and social learning • Objectives • Establish taxonomy / categorisation of different types of deliberative approaches to valuation • Outline the research needed re. social learning in relation to deliberative valuation, and re. up scaling and aggregation of deliberative valuation outcomes • Identify key items for research agenda in depth • Activities • Mike Christie – Classifying deliberative and participatory valuation approaches • Ioan Fazey – What is social learning? • Tim Taylor – Deliberative and participatory approaches to health • Breakout discussion groups • Feedback

Round 3: Problems with supply of valuation evidence • Objectives • Outline key problems in depth • Identify research agenda in depth for different decision-making contexts • Activities • Duncan Russell – What are the decision-making contexts where valuation evidence is/can be taken up? • Liz O’Brien – For and against the inclusion of plural values: perspectives of policymakers • Breakout discussion groups • Feedback
