How Tobacco Use Affects the Body • One long term physical effect of smoking is a dry, hacking cough. • A dry cough is often a symptom of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) • COPD- condition in which passages in the lungs become swollen and irritated, eventually losing their elasticity. • Smoking is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease, a disease of the heart and blood vessels.
