  4. Thesis Statement or Claim (1pt) • A thesis statement is a sentence in which you state an argument about a topic and then describe, briefly, how you will prove your argument.

  6. Contextualization (1 pt) • Describes a broader historical context relevant to the prompt (background info).

  7. Evidence in LEQ • Provides specific examples of evidence relevant to the topic of the prompt. • Or • Supports an argument in response to the prompt using specific and relevant examples of evidence.

  8. Analysis & Reasoning -HIPPO • Historical Context-Whatwas going on when the author wrote this document? • Intended Audience • Point of View-Who is the author? How did the author’s background (race, gender, socioeconomic class) impact their written perspective? • Purpose- Why did the author create the source? Why did the author create the source? • Outside Information

  9. DO NOT!! • Use too many pronouns. BE SPECIFIC! • Use absolutes “everyone”, “nobody”, etc. • Use these phrases: “back in the day”, “in the olden days”, “back then” • Talk about today • Use “I”, “In my opinion”, “I think”, I believe” • Use the word “being” • “She was being chased.” “She was chased.”

  10. DO’S • Be clear in your writing • Use your thesis as a road map • Be careful with tenses- its ok to use past tense when writing about the past • Provide evidence to back up your statements • Write neatly • Go over the AP Rubric

  11. THE DBQ – Document Based Essay 5 Paragraph Essay With a Thesis Statement Use the documents as evidence to back up your thesis/argument.

  14. Evidence in DBQ • Use docs to back up your thesis/argument • Uses 3 docs (1 pt) • Uses 6 docs (2 pts) • Provide evidence beyond documents – use at least 1 additional piece of specific historical evidence (not found in the docs.

  15. Analysis & Reasoning in DBQ (1-2 PTS) • For at least 3 docs explains how or why the document’s historical context, intended audience, point of view, purpose, and/or outside info is relevant to the argument.
