  1. American Nuclear Society Radiation Protection & Shielding Division (RPSD) Presentation to the ANS Board of Directors John C. Wagner June 11 2008, Anaheim CA

  2. Division/TG Mission The division promotes the interchange of technology related to: • the transport of particulate and electromagnetic radiation in materials and biological systems; • techniques and instrumentation to measure and calculate radiation fields; and • the quantification of radiation effects and nuclear heat deposition within materials.  Radiation protection management, ALARA, operation health physics, and radiation shield design and evaluation are key subject areas.

  3. RPSD Governance • Executive Committee Structure • Chair John Wagner • Vice Chair John Hendricks (automatically becomes chair) • Secretary Erik Shores • Treasurer F. Arzu Alpan • 10 Members (3-year terms) • Past Chair: Andrew Hodgdon (Nominating Committee) • Board Liaison: Joe Colvin • Communications/Web, E-mail/Newsletter

  4. RPSD Governance • Membership Trends Last 5 Years/Composition • ~12% of membership is students • ~12% of ANS members are RPSD members

  5. RPSD Governance • Budget

  6. RPSD Governance • Division Planning • Organize multiple sessions for the ANS Annual and Winter Meetings • Organize RPSD topical meetings • RPSD topicals in even-numbered years • Include code workshops for professional development • Collaborate with other divisions • Mathematics & Computation (MCD) topicals in odd-numbered years • Radiation Protection and Shielding Division (RPSD) topicals in even-numbered years • Along with RPD and MCD support the activities of the Joint Benchmark Committee • Collaborate with the International Nuclear Community • RPSD topical meeting is held in collaboration with the International Conference on Radiation Shielding every ~6 years • Many non-US attendees at recent RPSD08/ICRS11 meeting • Attract young members to ANS and RPSD • Provide funds for travel to RPSD meetings • Support student conferences

  7. RPSD Governance • Communications • Website: http://rpsd.ans.org • Needs to be updated • Newsletter: • Two per year • E-mailed to members (discontinued hardcopy mailing) • Also posted on RPSD website • Executive Committee Listserver • Used for communications among members

  8. RPSD Contributions to ANS • ANS Position Statements • RPSD members, especially the members of the executive committee and officers, have contributed to ANS position statements • Participation with Other Professional Societies • Mathematics & Computations Division • Health Physics Society • Co-sponsorship of meetings, e.g., International Conference on Radiation Shielding (ICRS), Monte Carlo 2005 & 2010 • Society Leadership • Our members serve on the ANS board and actively participate in many standing committees • Non-Meeting Publications • Our members publish papers in Nuclear Science and Engineering, Nuclear Technology, Annals of Nuclear Energy, Progress in Nuclear Energy, Journal of Computational Physics, Journal of Medical Physics, TTSP, SIAM Journals, IEEE Journals, ASTM Journals

  9. RPSD Services to Membership • Professional Development • Numerous tutorials at national & topical meetings • Roundtables just recently initiated at national meetings; first one on “Analytical & Experimental Benchmarks” • Scholarships • Everett P. Blizard Scholarship • Peer Recognition/Awards • ANS Fellow • Service Recognition Award • Professional Excellence Award • Rockwell “Lifetime Achievement” Award (awarded to Enrico Sartori, April 2008) • Student Support • Student Conference Support • RPSD Topical Conference Student Support
