HISTORY in 90s • Founded in 1989 as a part of the Dept. of Foreign Languages • 27 student stations (analog audio only) and main console • Tandberg Educational Language Laboratory IS-10 • 4 Apple II computers, 4 small TV/VCR combos, • No classes scheduled in the Laboratory • 1 Coordinator & 1 evening Technical Assistant

  3. Budget in 90s • Based on the Department of Foreign Languages ($500-600/year) • Budget for Student Aides (as peers who assist students inforeign languages) • Service contract $4,000/year to maintain Tandberg equipment

  4. Transformation I • Physical - the same (one room 1,500 sq. ft.) • Educational space (equipment) - new • Weekly Activity (from 600 to 230 students) • Eleven languages

  5. Transformation II • Basic Purpose of the Foreign Language Learning Center • Staff: FLLC Coordinator (f/t) + 32 hours of p/t TAs (tutors in 5 languages) • Budget 2013 • Dept. of FL - a) $ 1,500 (hardware); b) $ 1,000 (software, educational videos) • Technology Fund - variable ($5-15K)

  6. NCC - FLLC in 2013 • 1. To provide validation, advocacy and intellectual home for contemporary approaches to language teaching and learning grounded upon principles of second language acquisition

  7. NCC - FLLC in 2013 2. To directly support student foreign language & culture learning both within and outside of the Center • Hours: Mon-Thurs 9 am - 9 pm, Fri & Sat. 9 am - 3pm

  8. NCC - FLLC in 2013 • 3. To support the integration of technology into language learning and teaching within and outside of BOTH the Center and individual courses

  9. NCC - FLLC in 2013 • 4. To support or administer informed models of foreign language assessment 5. To support the professional development of all foreign language faculty via facilitative programming, instructional resources and pedagogical training

  10. NCC - FLLC in 2013 • 6. To provide coordination and strategic vision for foreign language learning to meet SUNY outcomes for foreign languages specifically & global education generally
