  2. Recycling in Lubbock • We’re proposing a research study to try to re-implement a recycling program in Lubbock, Texas. • Currently, 1% of the Lubbock population (out of 242,268 residents) recycles.

  3. Why Recycle? • Save trees • Protect Wildlife diversity • Reduce use of toxic chemicals • Curb global warming • Stem the flow of water pollution • Reduce need for landfills

  4. Why Recycle? (continued) • Reduce need for incinerators (harmful pollutants) • Create jobs and promote economic development • TNRC found that recycling added $18.5 billion in value to the economics of 12 southern states. • Profit by selling recycled goods • Recycling leads to more recycling

  6. Review Lubbock’s Current Recycling Program • Comprehensive Waste Audit • All aspects of current waste • Reveal unknown revenues (additional funding) • Compliance with recycling laws and regulations

  14. Location • Centralized in Lubbock, Texas • Texas is a prime location for other states to send their trash due to the large amount of undeveloped land that they turn into landfills.

  15. Budget • $150 per team, per hour • 130 hours (32.5 hours per week) • Total = $19,500

  16. Call to Action Recommendation to the City Council • Consider our proposal • Act now to revitalize Lubbock’s economy • Recognize benefits from long-term standpoint
