The 2012 Olympics and the academic community • The Olympic Games as a laboratory for the analysis of modern society • A multifaceted phenomenon requiring multidisciplinary approaches • Academic community has a duty to document the Games and to advance knowledge in the field • Little coordinated effort to day to address the complexity of the Olympics • De Moragset al (1995) – Global television coverage of Barcelona Olympics • Sydney 2000 – “Did the Olympics lead to a greater collaboration between faculties?” – NO (Cashman & Toohey, 2002) • Athens 2004 – no large-scale projects • Beijing 2008 – Olympic Studies Reader + a huge amount of Chinese research • Inherent complexities of Olympic research • Cost • Access – ODA (public) and LOCOG (private) • Ethical issues (confidentiality, conflict of interest)

Olympic landscapes • ‘Land’ – the Olympic Games • ‘Scape’ – the way the land is perceived and responded to (Becher & Trowler, 2001) • The London 2012 academic tribes and territories • Brunel 2012 Consortium – ICSEMIS (www.icsemis2012.com) in partnership with Routledge – encouraging inter-and-multidisciplinary research through a coordinated publishing effort and a web-based platform: • publish over 40 Olympic focused journal special issues from a wide range of disciplines in 2012 and 2013 • a two volume official collection on the making and experiences of the London Games • Routledge Online Studies on the Olympic and Paralympic Games
