Biography • Born November 9, 1934 in Brooklyn New York • Died December 20, 1996 (62 years old) • Was an astronomer, astrophysicist, and cosmologist. • Attended many universities, such as University of Chicago, Harvard University, and University of California, Berkeley • Taught many years at Cornell University.

  3. Contribution to astronomy • Sagan was a consultant and adviser to NASA in the 1950’s • He prepared Apollo astronauts before their flights to the Moon • He was an experimenter on the Mariner, Viking, Voyager, and Galileo expeditions to the planets. • He also helped solve mysteries of the high temperatures of Venus, and the seasonal changes of Mars.

Contribution to astronomy • Sagan received the NASA medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement and for Distinguished Public Service, as well as the NASA Apollo Achievement Award. • There was an asteroid that was named after him (Asteroid 2709 Sagan). • He received the John F. Kennedy Astronautics Award of the American Astronautically Society, and many other awards. • Many of todays planetary scientist are his former students

Discoveries • Carl Sagan discovered an amazing fact about Venus in February 21, 1963 • Satellite Mariner flew by Venus; its microwave and infrared radiometers revealed that while Venus’s cloud tops were cool, the surface was extremely hot- at least 425 degrees Celsius, which ends any hope of the planet give refuge to live. • Carl Sagan was successful in his theory of Venus being uninhabitable.

Extraterrestrial life • Sagan was a firm believer in life elsewhere in the universe • throughout his career he always protested the importance of searching for extraterrestrial life • carl was always supporting and contributing towards projects using radio telescopes to search for extraterrestrial signals
