  2. BASIC INFO • Born April 27, 1820-December 8, 1903 • Born in Derby, England

  3. LET'S GET TO KNOW HERB • Big influence in the intellectual life of the Victorian Era. • A principle proponent in the Evolutionary Theory. • Better known for developing and applying the Evolutionary theory to philosophy, psychology, and the study of society--His "synthetic philosophy."

  4. FATHER OF SOCIAL DARWINISM • Spencer published a theory of evolution (7 years) before Darwin.

  5. SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST • Spencer was the first to publish a theory of evolution, and he applied it to society. • He, NOT Darwin, coined the term 'survival of the fittest.' • He believed that the strong and fit would flourish in society, while the weak and unfit should be allowed to die. • Darwin later called this, 'natural selection.'

  6. PRINCIPLES AND PUBLICATIONS • Spencer developed an agnostic belief by his father who constantly asking him, "Can you tell me the cause of this?" Where he established his belief that everything could be explained by natural causes. • Spencer was a writer and subeditor for the Economist • He wrote several books that consisted of: Social Statistics or The Conditions Essential to Human Happiness, Principles in Psychology, and Study of Sociology • Earlier in Spencer's life he was offered to be sent to Cambridge University, though he declined the offer.. • In 1902 Spencer was nominated for a Nobel Prize in Literature. However, Spencer declined most of the honors he was given.
