What Does A School Day Look Like? • 4 mod day • 80 minute mods • FLEX: (Student Enrichment Time) • 30 minutes daily between mod 1 & mod 2 • Year is divided into 2 semesters and/or 4 quarters • 1 credit course = 18 weeks long • 1/2 credit course = 9 weeks long • A/B courses = year long every other day

  8. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Credit Requirements: • Minimum 25 credits Enrollment Requirement: • 4 years beyond 8th grade • 4 credits after the completion of 11th grade Student Service Requirement: • 75 hours • Exemplary Service Award – 300 hours • Service Reflections Forms Required

  10. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS University of Maryland System Requirements (this does not guarantee admission into University of MD) • 2 credits of World Language andAlgebra II OR • 2 credits of Advanced Technology and Algebra II AND/OR • State-approved Completer Program

Required Classes • Credits of English • Must include: English 9 • English 10 • English 11 or AP Language • English 12 or AP Literature • Credits of Social Studies • Must include: United States History • Government • World History • Credits of Science • Include: Conceptual Physics • Chemistry I • Biology

More Required Classes • 4 Credits of Math • 3 credits of Algebra and 1 credit of Geometry • Students must also take Algebra II or higher level math class senior year • Middle school math teachers will provide recommendations to help determine what math students should take in 9th grade • Credit Fine Arts • 1 Credit Technology Education (FOT) • 1 Credit Physical Education • ½ Credit Health • ½ Credit Financial Literacy

  15. How do you know what level course your child should take? Things to consider • Recommendation of 8th grade teacher • Student/Parent input • School Counselors Future plans • Studies have shown a high correlation between the level of classes taken in high school and success in college.

What does a 9th Grader sign up for? <8 total credits> <2 alternate courses> YOU WILL TAKE YOUR: • English, Math, Social Studies and Science academic classes • ***Freshman Seminar **** You are likely to need 2-3: ELECTIVE CHOICES i.e.: • PE I and Health I • Foundations of Technology • Fine Arts • World Language • Business • Agriculture Sciences

  17. ADVISORY PROGRAM • Each student is assigned to an academic advisor. • Advisory lessons provided once each week for 30 minutes during FLEX. • Program is based upon a county curriculum. • Students will see advisor every day and should feel comfortable coming to them with concerns, needs, etc.

Freshman Seminar – Important! • Transition/Orientation to Century High School. • Administrators, media center, guidance services, career center, and computer lab. • Activities and lessons are designed to integrate literacy, study, and technology skills. • Develop self-knowledge, goal setting, career exploration, and decision-making skills. • Begin an electronic portfolio and develop an educational career plan. • Select an academy.

See the CCPS Program of Studies for details) English (4 credits) Mathematics (4 credits) Science (3 credits) Physical Education (1 credit) Social Studies (3 credits) Financial Literacy (1/2 credit) Fine Arts (1 credit) Health (1/2 credit) Foundations of Technology (1 credit) World Language or Advanced Technology (2 credits) or a Completer Program (4-9 credits) SELECT EIGHT (8) CREDITS!!

  23. How to fill out the Course Selection Sheet Keep the Program of Studies as a resource. Use PENCIL. Must total 8 credits. Use the level of classes suggested by your middle school teachers or counselor. Complete left side of page first. Must choose Alternatives: One full credit and one ½ credit class. Please choose these classes carefully! Return your course selection sheet to Sykesville Middle by February 6, 2014.

  24. Things to consider or not to do… • DON’Ttake a class because of who teaches it. Staffing changes from year to year. • DON’Tsign up for classes just because a friend is signing up for that course. Most courses have multiple sections and you cannot pick the section you are taking. • DO remember this is high school and EVERY grade you earn can make an impact on your future plans.

Dates to Remember/Next steps January 28: Students visited Century High School (students heard this information) February 6:Course selection sheets due; if you still have questions then request a conference on the back of your course selection sheet. Mid-August: Fall Sports tryouts (must have completed physicals) August 21, 2014: (tentative): New Student Orientation in the afternoon August 25, 2014: First day of school
