Committed Disciples Pray With BoldnessLuke 11:1-13 • Prayer is the fuel of the Christian’s life - the power plant of our walk with God. • We all struggle in our prayer life. • “To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing” • Martin Luther • Is that your experience with prayer?

Jesus made prayer a priority in his life and ministry. • Luke 5:16 [NIV] - But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. • After his baptism (Luke 3:21) • Before choosing his 12 disciples (Luke 6:12) • Before Peter’s great confession (Luke 9:18) • At his transfiguration (Luke 9:28-29) • In Gethsemane (Luke 22: 39-46)

Jesus was the model of a man of prayer. • His disciples wanted to be equipped to follow the Lord’s example • Luke 11: 1 [NIV] – “Lord, teach us to pray.” • The Lord’s Prayer – a model of prayer • Prayer is Directed to God our Father • Prayer is about deepening our relationship with our heavenly Father • Prayer is Intended for God’s Glory • Prayer is about his will, not our will

  4. c. Prayer Acknowledges Our Dependence on God. • Jesus wants us to present our physical & spiritual needs to the Father • Three key principles regarding prayer: • Prayer Requires Boldness & Persistence • Prayer Requires Confidence • Prayer Requires Faith

The parable: • The relational context - people involved are “friends” • Hospitality was an unwritten law in the East. • Homes were mainly one room dwellings. • The Point: • Luke 11:8 [NIV] – “I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man’s boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.”

Prayer Requires Boldness & Persistence • “boldness” a unique word in the original Greek • Sometimes translated  “persistence” - NKJV • Interpreted as “audacity”; “brazen tenacity”; “shamelessness” • A strong message: • The man received what he wanted because of his determination and persistence in asking • Have you wrestled with God in prayer with such boldness and tenacity?

  7. Luke 11: 9-10 [NIV] - “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” • Present tense verbs ongoing, continuing processes • Ask – and keep on asking • Seek – and keep on seeking • Knock – and keep on knocking

  8. Never give up on God because he is your loving Father who is committed to meeting all our needs. • Pray with boldness and persistence • Hebrews 4:16 [NKJV] – “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Prayer Requires Confidence • Prayer has more to do with knowing who we are praying to than what we are praying about. • The story is not a parable of comparisons but a parable of contrast. • We serve a God who is our loving Father eager to help us in time of need and anxious to respond to our requests.

  10. Luke 11: 11-13 [NIV] - “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give…those who ask him!” • We serve a Father who is infinitely more loving and caring than any earthly father could ever be. • We can pray in CONFIDENCE!

  11. Do you pray with confidence that God will hear you and respond? • Remember – NO and NOT NOW are answers to prayer. • God answers prayer because it brings glory to HIS NAME. • “When God’s people pray, God’s reputation is at stake.” Warren Wiersbe

Prayer Requires Faith • Luke 11: 13 [NIV] – “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” • Matthew 7:11 [NIV] - …how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! • Matthew: God provides all good things through prayer. • Luke: focuses on God meeting our spiritual needs through prayer.

Recall the Lord’s prayer • “Lead us not into temptation – but deliver us from evil.” • Deliverance comes when we ask God for spiritual direction in our lives provided through his Spirit living and working in us. • Ask him for the enablement of the Spirit: • To empower us to overcome temptation • To empower us to live fruitful lives • To empower us to apply spiritual wisdom to the trials of life we face.

  14. James 1: 5-6 [NIV] – “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.” • Our prayer for the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives requires us to pray in faith – believing – trusting that his Spirit will fill us and guide us toward maturity in Christ.

Ephesians 3: 16-19 [NIV] – “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

  16. God offers us an open line of communication with you  prayer • Jesus modeled a life of prayer to show us how important it is. • How seriously do you take prayer? • Pray for our church • Pray for our own hearts to be transformed through the power of his Spirit to become fully committed disciples of Jesus Christ • Pray – with boldness; confidence; faith.
